Eat For Your Modeling Career

By Mistie McDonald

So the saying goes..
"You are what you eat"

Its really true. So LISTEN UP!!
If you wanna model and be successful that means taking care of your temple.
You have to eat for beauty people!

This means not filling your bodies full of crap that is going to take its toll on your skin.
It means staying away from booze, drugs,& cigarettes!

Your outer appearance is what sells you as a model.
So that means taking care of it people.
You should only consume things that will help you stay younger looking.
That means no junk food ya'll!
I know I know I know...
But Mistie I'm young gorgeous, skinny and can eat and do what I want.
Yep you sure can.. You can also age prematurely and lose your career to!
I will point blank tell you..
A raw food vegan diet is the best for beauty.
But not all of you will even attempt that.
So that means incorporating as much raw fruits and veggies you can.
The easiest way to do this is juicing and smoothies.
Don't believe me?
Do your research!
Don't get me wrong
I love me some meat.
But having a diet full of mostly raw fruits and veggies is key.
Plus!
HYDRATION!!!
HYDRATION!!!
HYDRATION!!!

Hydration is a major key to keeping your skin supple and beautiful.
Dehydrated skin ages quickly and looks older than it needs to.
You have to have the water to fill those cells to make your skin look full, soft and younger.
Trust me.. when you start eating for beauty you will be amazed at how your body changes.
So how to you incorporate more fruit and veggies into your world?
SIMPLE!!
SMOOTHIES YO!

They are super yummy and easy to make!
Plus they taste sooo freakin awesome!
You literally can throw whatever you want to in them.
I will advise about using the following liquids instead of dairy.

Coconut water
(crazy high in nutrition content and tastes really good but is also really easy to mask its taste if u dont like it. It doesnt taste like coconut milk)

Almond Milk or other Nut Milks

Good ol filtered water

So below are some easy recipes get you started!

Green smoothies are a must and can be really awesome tasting.
Here is a super easy one that tastes amazing!

Beautiful Green
2 handful's of raw baby spinach
3 ripe frozen banana's
2 green apples
2 cups coconut water
(or liquid of your choice)
Add liquid to blender 1st.
Then add the spinach and apples.
Blend
Lastly add the frozen banana's, blend and enjoy!

Sunrise Oatmeal Smoothie
1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
2 cups orange juice
1/2c coconut water
4 ripe banana's
2 handfuls of frozen strawberries
In blender add oats & chop till they are powder.
Add your Oj & blend until smooth.
Add strawberries & coconut water.
Add more or less liquid for the thickness you desire Enjoy!

Ok lovelies!!
Don't forget to hydrate and get your fruits and veggies in!
Eat for beauty!

This One Time When Gwen Stefani Saved My Life

By Carly Crossley

I was teased as a kid for having a big mouth; not in the sense of talking too much, which I'm sure my teachers would argue, but for literally having cartoonishly large features.  The things that you remember from childhood are always so random, but it stuck with me as a negative for a really long time. As an adult, I was embarrassed by the attention it attracted, so for most of my life, Chapstick was my only friend.
Fast forward forward to a few years ago; skipping through the annals of the new-mom era fraught with track jackets, chucks and ponytails (I still love all three of those so so much).  I found myself having a fashion enlightenment, a beauty awakening.  A light bulb went off and I heard angels sing to me: what would Gwen Stefani do? My mind was reeling. Oh my God! Gwen would be mortified to leave the house looking like I did!
I had always prided my inner jock over my inner girly girl. My mother, who to this day dresses immensely better than I do and supplies half my wardrobe with her hand-me-downs, would simply roll her eyes as I'd come out of practice wearing a hoodie, my spandex volleyball shorts, Dr. Martens and proclaim, "What's wrong with this?" when she would let me know that we were not actually going straight home.  I thought this was actual confidence- a good thing. The "I'm not embarrassed to go to the store in *those* pants" (we all have a pair) mentality. But then again, who's to separate me from Walmart Pajama Pants Lady.
Step one of WWGSD was to set rules for appropriate times to be caught in public wearing yoga pants.  (This is a true story and perhaps I'll share the list some day.) Step two, my most favorite stage, involved boots. The most important, however, was embracing Gwen's signature move.
This venture, sub-categorized as operation: make grandma smile in heaven (she wore lipstick like every moment of every day) was, while perhaps perceived as shallow to some, incredibly empowering to me. I actually overcame a completely real and irrational fear. I found a confidence in myself, and in that: more beauty than any tube of colored cream could ever provide.  To me, WWGSD became an actual mantra about feeling good about myself.
Deciding to choose jeans over sweats was not hard, nor profound, but to spend 4 seconds applying lipstick changes the entire way I feel about myself when I walk out the door.  The pseudo confidence I thought I possessed to go out in any and everything is nothing compared to the spark I feel or the way I smile when I have "my lips on."
Do I wear it all day everyday? Heck no, but never once have I been asked WHY I'm wearing it. If I were though, the answer would be, "Because *I* like it." I feel like I've finally grown up, finally become a woman.
Today I embrace who I am, and take my biggest insecurity and make it into my biggest statement. My feminism doesn't come from burning bras and doing anything a man can do. Mine is in the form of doing things only I can do. I'm no longer needing to blend in, I am ready to be seen for me.
I've adopted many more mantras since that fateful moment. My style has grown and evolved more in the last two years than at any other time in my life. Some of my favorite inspirations for fashion, hair, and beauty are Nicole Ritchie, Drew Barrymore, and Zooey Deschanel, but I still owe the biggest thank you to Gwen for pulling me out of my shell.

Always be your best, and stay photo shoot fresh!

I would never in a million years say that looks are everything, but for a model and a girl who wants to be paid as a model you do have to consider your looks because basically your job is to be beautiful and pleasing to the eyes and if you don't take care of certain things like your hair, skin, nails, and such it can cost you a job.
Models never know when their next job will be. It could be months between jobs or even days. You never know when someone will want you to represent their line or product or do a photo shoot, so it is very important to always be ready. You never want to risk losing a job over something like scaly feet or a skin issue because you were to lazy to wash your make up off the night before.
Little things daily can help prevent bigger issues later.
Such as....
I know some nights get late and you think "oh I will just use a baby wipe" and then the next morning you have a nasty pimple! It's not worth it. Clients are more likely to hire someone who's skin needs less photoshop. Yes I know some people can't help breaking out or having skin issues and that's ok, but being lazy doesn't help so it's important to take care of such important things like your skin.
Don't wait five minutes before your shoot or job to shave your legs so
Washing your face like you should to help prevent avoidable skin issues
.you quickly run a razor over your legs giving yourself bright red razor burn.
Keep up with routine manicures and pedicures even if you do them yourself. Unkept nails won't look so great on camera, and try to stick to nude colors unless the job requires otherwise.
your hair color fresh, (because several months of roots will show up as years worth under the lighting) and use a whitening toothpaste daily to keep those million dollar smiles worth their money! ;)
Keep things like your eyebrows waxed,(and other areas  ;)
ocus on everyday things in your life that can help or hurt your modeling career. Things like drinking water over other beverages will help keep your skin looking well. Don't eat super salty things before you know you have a shoot so you don't risk being all puffed up. Don't drink a lot of alcohol the night before you shoot. Don't get your hair dyed right before a job and possibly have dye marks on places they shouldn't be. Don't experiment with new looks or techniques the day of the job. Just little things that you may not think are important that can hurt your modeling.

FYou don't have to obsess over these things daily, but little things like that can help a lot in the long run. It's important to always be the best you that you can be. That doesn't mean you have to try and change who you are but always take the extra time so you can shine your brightest. Always be ready to take a job or photo shoot at a moments notice and more jobs will be sure to follow.

What this girl needs to travel.. Oh the things we cant live without!

By Carly Crossley

I travel this week, and between a crazy holiday-driven work schedule and my kids, that means I need to do my very least favorite thing: plan.
My packing strategies vary by location and for work vs. pleasure. This trip to glamorous Kansas City, Missouri is forecast to hold a girls only movie night for 'Catching Fire' and a Matt Nathanson concert celebrating my best friend's big three-O. Wild, I know. I will not be bringing the full beauty arsenal that I might at other times, but I'm sure there will be plenty of bathroom selfies and Instagram opportunities thus requiring at the very least, my go-to favorites.
I am not what one would call “a light packer.” The thought of just having a carry-on cripples my mind a little. How, I might ask, is one supposed to dress for four different days, with only one pair of boots? So I pack five. And probably two pairs of flats. That being said, I typically try to pack EVERYTHING I need into my checked bag and only bring a purse on the plane big enough to hold a few extras aside from my everyday items.
But herein lies the rub: I do not trust planes, with baggage at least, so I keep with me my makeup favorites (and a bathing suit if I'm going towards the sun). As I see it, I can buy a new dress or a pair of shoes that I would wear again when I'm home, but it would cost hundreds of dollars to replace my makeup just to have it (eventually) waiting for me wherever it ends up. I couldn't live without my Urban Decay Naked Pallet, but I don't need TWO of the SAME... get my drift?  I do, however, have to narrow down the mother load to something more manageable.
I start planning what goes in my bag by what I need on the plane itself. My skin hates the air at cruising altitude. I used to travel with a full face of makeup in hopes of meeting a celebrity or some incognito prince charming waiting to engage me in 4 hours of witty banter before sweeping me away for eternity. Then, my face got dry and itchy and oily all at the same time and I thought... meeeh, better not.
What my skin DOES like is BB cream, or in the case of my most recent Sephora binge, CC cream. A healthy dose all over before the flight, super lip balm, a double coat of mascara (my allergies suck, ya'll, and the air makes me want to rub my eyes out of my face, so anything more is bad news bears.) and a smidgen of bronzer because I don't want my neighbor, obviously a potential suitor, to be cursing the world for sitting him next to the sickly girl. I typically re-BB or CC during the flight if I start getting that tight feeling that makes my pores start leaking oil worse than my first car. And if Charming is busy looking the other way, I may swirl on a touch more bronzer and even add lipstick to match the twinkle of my eyes.
My other necessities are as follows and in no particular order of importance: Foundation, concealer, blush, lip sticks (I limit to two), one shadow pallet, eye primer, liner, brow pencil and my most basic brushes. I consider this to be my A-team for achieving 90% of my looks and I could definitely survive a stint on the 'Lost' island with these. Thank God my CC has SPF.
I also carry on any prescription medications, a phone charger, a hand full of bobby pins, a hair tie, a book, and my wallet- stripped of any extras beyond ID, credit/debit cards that will be used, and cash.  I do not need my PetSmart cards, a checkbook, or my kids' insurance information if they are not coming with me. (That stuff is kept in an easy to access spot at home in case my sitters have an emergency.) I consider myself the feminine MacGuyver and can make ANYTHING happen with a ½ dozen bobby pins and some mascara. If you are too young to know who that is, a.)IMBD it... b.) don't tell me, I'll feel old.
Joining my shoes in my checked luggage are my hair products, skincare thats over ounceage, my other makeup needs fitting the occasion (Miami called for MUCH more glitter), a flat iron and/or my 1” curling iron, and pending location- my dryer, roundbrush, and shears.
Carrying my makeup on was a life saver earlier this year when I was delayed coming home from a work weekend in Vegas- I was stranded in San Fransisco over night, assigned to the first flight in the morning and heading straight into work upon landing. I can rock fake-sleep in a chair clothes any day, but I used my rubberband and bobby pins for an effortlessly pretty topknot, and did my makeup the last 30 minutes of the flight. As soon as the door opened I was running for my car then on the road like I'd actually planned the day. So whether you are coming or going, next time you fly, keep the goods with you! You can never predict what may happen, or who you may meet.
Until I find him, I'm gonna keep flying!
Thanks ALL
Carly

Have a Plan B

By Mistie McDonald

So do you have a plan B?
Have you put all your apples in the modeling basket because you just KNOW your the new it girl/boy?
Well let me tell you that you are living in a delusion.
I know this post is going to be brutally honest. But its something that needs to be said.

Remember kiddies that your looks will fade. You will age.. and you will become to old to model.
Yes there is a 40 plus division of modeling but its a real small market.
So don't put all your apples into the modeling basket.

Fact of the matter is.. modeling careers are extremely short.
I'm gonna say a good 95% of you will never make decent money at it.
Most of you wont treat it like a business and a lot of you will fall off within our 1st 3 yrs of shooting.
Yep that is some crappy reality isn't it?

The modeling industry is not glamorous. I know it seems to be, but its really not.
Its very hateful honestly & rather abusive.
So have a plan B.
Make sure you have a career, something to fall back on.
Because there are only a few that really make it big. Even most agency model's have short career's.
They also don't always make the big bucks.
But even then their career's are short as well.
If you're over 25 in this industry your old.
That's the sad fact.
So be smart.
Have a plan B.
So that you aren't put into a desperate situation.
Be smart about it. Treat it as a business,
but also be smart and know its more than likely only going to be a very serious hobby.
This link goes to a FANTASTIC article from  Micheline Pitt.
It deal's with the pin-up world but this advice and reality really applies to all of modeling..

Suck it up and keep your mouth shut!

By
The Vintage Doll

Sometimes in the modeling industry, (more times then less really) unfair things happen. People play favorites, girls will steal jobs and ideas from you, people cheat at contests, it's just like anything else in this world and a lot of times it's a dishonest and frustrating job.

I can't tell you how many times I lost out on something because someone played dirty and cheated or professional brands played favorites. It's never fun to fall victim to these things but it happens. What also happens is a lot of models let their anger and frustration get the best of them and they let loose venting about the situation all over things like their facebooks or twitter. This is one of the most immature and unprofessional things you can do, even if you were treated unfairly and right. I have seen so many models mad because they lost at something so they complain about how unfair it was and how they deserved it more then the other girl, or how the magazine or company just didn't like them blah blah blah. You know what that says about you..??
YOUR A DRAMA QUEEN!
Venting all over facebook and being disrespectful towards other models or magazines shows you in a poor light and will only assist you in losing jobs, not help you prove that you were mistreated. No one wants to work with someone that cries to the whole world when they don't get their way, would you? I know at times it's hard not to when your confidence has been gutted by unfair and dishonest actions, but in the long run I promise biting your tongue is truly the best thing here.

It's hard sometimes to keep your mouth shut when you worked so hard for something and then in the end it doesn't work out and feels like your hard work was for nothing and ignored. It's a confidence blow and hard to swallow, but crying about it all over social media will only continue you losing out and missing out on bigger and better opportunities because no one will want to work with someone who is a sore loser and unprofessional at that.
Keep it to yourself, or go call your best friend. Facebook isn't your friend and posting rants on things like your modeling page will later treat you like a drunk text to an ex boyfriend......
You will regret it big time!!!!!

I have seen several models voice their disappointment In their losing covers of magazines or contests in very distasteful ways and I have also see those exact models fall off the modeling planet. Even if you were wronged, blasting all over social media about it isn't a classy thing to do. All you can do is learn from it and move to the next opportunity. Don't let it get you down! There is so much more out there you just have to keep working and keep pushing forward. It will come full circle and those who work unfairly and cheat will eventually lose the air in their sails and fall flat because being dishonest will never get you anywhere for long.

Always stay positive and you even the negative moments in your modeling careers as fuel to do bigger and better things.

Don't Let Others Opinions Steal Your Beauty

By The Vintage Doll Mimi LaRue

The moment we decide to become models is also the moment we decide to allow others to have opinions and views on our image. Does becoming a model mean we become bullet proof to these opinions? NO WAY! It still hurts us just as much to have someone talk negative about how we look as anyone else. Yes we are the ones who decide to put ourselves in the public eye but that doesn't mean others should have the right to tear is apart in every way and point out what they like and dislike about how we look or how our bodies are. Unfortunately in today's world more and more negative souls seem to shine out among the positive and really can tear a model down if she lets them.
It's never going to matter how pretty you are, how perfect your hair and make up is, how amazing your wardrobe is, or how great of shape your body is, there is always, ALWAYS, going to be a client or person out there that is going to think you need to change something or have something mean and negative to say about you. I read horrible comments directed at me daily, "your to skinny to be a pinup" "eat a cheeseburger" "she needs to put on some weight" blah blah blah, change change change!!! Some times it gets a little over whelming. Yet in the midst of those are many others including lots of women who say I am helping them find their own beauty through the work that I do and it makes it all worth it.
Everyone in the world if put on display for others to judge would get a mix of positive and negative comments about their image, it's not just models. You can't allow someone's warped view of beauty twisted by their own deep seeded pain and self esteem issues steal the beauty that you carry yourself. It's hard to ignore yes but you have to keep in mind that these people don't hold any real weight in your lives and offer you nothing. They are just speaking empty words that in no way really say who you are but show that they are extremely unhappy and live in a world of self judgment and sadness so they lash out at models and other women that carry and exude the beauty and confidence they so much wish they had.
Never ever lose sight of your dreams and what you want to do in this industry over a negative comment a self conscious beauty stealing personality spoke out to try and take away from you what they want for themselves but can't bring themselves to go after. It will never be worth it.
No one is perfect, and there will be many people out there who will tell you that as a model, but the ones that truly take the time to look at you, not the image or photo you portray but really look at who you are will see how beautiful you are and that's what I want over superficial beauty any day.
Keep your chins up and don't let weightless people in this world steal your beauty, joy or dreams. You deserve to have them all and they don't deserve the satisfaction of knowing they took it from you. The best way to get back at those so called "haters" is to not lash out and stoop to their level but to rise so big above them that they can't see you through the rainbows and clouds that you have reached in your own hard work. Let reaching your goals do the talking because in the end it will always say the perfect come back to every negative thing any one has to say. Until next time, remember your beauty shines from within and if you keep it sparkling then no one can dull your shine! Xoxo The Vintage Doll

What Sort Of Model Are You?

by Mistie McDonald

So you want to model.
Ok awesome.
The next questions you need to ask yourself is :
What genre of modeling do I fit?
What is my body type?
What are my stats?
(height,weight,etc)
What am I interested in?

Most girls get into modeling because well "I have a pretty face, a hot body & I like the camera."
This isn't really the reason to get into modeling.
This business is brutal. You have to have a tough skin.
Because you are going to be run through the ringer when it comes to your looks and what you do and don't fit. Especially if you choose fashion.

Now for some cold hard facts.
If you are wanting to work in fashion and want to be signed to an agency,
you better be no shorter than 5'7 and no larger than a size 4 and thats pushin it.
A size 4 is considered a bit fat for fashion.
Also you better be younger than 18.
It blows I know. But them's the breaks when it comes to the fashion world.
Now its a bit more loose in rules for commercial print fashion, but not much.
They still want you to be 5'6 and no bigger than a size 4.
The reason for this is that the sample sizes for designers are made to showcase the clothing with the least amount of material possible and well they are made to hang on sticks in all honesty.
Ok now on to the divisions of modeling.

Under fashion there is :
Fashion, Editorial, & Runway
All 3 of those have the strict height and size rule

Catalog
Not to restrictive.
This can be everything from web catalog to print.

Fit & Fitness
The only requirement for this is you have a sickeningly fit body
(think Jillian Michaels or body builders)

Plus Sized
Size restrictive. Mostly size 12-14 sometimes up to an 18.
They still want you tall. But it tends to be a little more body friendly.

Commercial Print
Height and size a lot like fashion.
Think about seeing the ad's in the mall in ur favorite stores

Showroom,Promotional,& Trade show
These are all basically the same thing.
Think about going to a convention or an event where u see booths with models wearing the companies logo's and promoting their products.
Measuring restrictions depend on the event.

Parts Modeling
Lips, legs, eyes, and other body parts.
Think makeup or lotion commercials

40 Plus Modeling
Basically for people over 40

Beauty
These are mostly seen for makeup companies and hair companies.
No measurement requirements because their head shots.
Think either nice and clean makeup/hair or really artsy!

Glamour
Think Fhm,playboy
Not really any stat requirments.

Alternative
There is literally no restrictions on this.
Anything goes honestly.
Think goth, punk, emo, steampunk, tattoo's and anything non mainstream

Ok so now that you have a basic understanding of the divisions of modeling, which I will go into more explanation of them at a later time.
Now is the time to look at yourself and start deciding what you think your good for.
Remember if your under 5'7 and not a size 4 or less toss fashion out the door.

So get in front of the mirror and be really honest with yourself.
Look at your measurements and your features and then look at the modeling divisions and choose.
Now I will tell you that you should try everything at least once.
That doesn't mean that you will choose that division. Just means you get to have a bit of fun.

The trick is to be honest with yourself. If you really aren't sure there is no harm in asking.

So good luck my darlings!
